Each year in August, across Australia, The Children’s Book Council of Australia brings children and books together celebrating Children’s Book Week. During this time Schools, Libraries, Booksellers, Authors, Illustrators and children celebrate Australian Children’s Literature.
During this time you will often see Children’s Book Character Parades and talented librarians creating amazing displays.
It’s not long now until the annual Book Week is upon us again. Like most parents, I adore reading to my boys every night. It is such a special time to spend all together, enjoying the stories while they drift off to sleep – after they fighting over who gets what story in whose bed first of course! Book Week is such a great event to help continue that love into school and make it so much fun with dress-ups and Book Week Costume Parades.
Now I know coming up with costume ideas can be challenging sometimes, especially as the kids get older and start having wild ideas and almost impossible to achieve requests. Of course, being a childrenswear designer, I take this challenge very seriously!
Sometimes an oversized cardboard playing card is all that is needed for an Alice in Wonderland idea, or a couple of soft drink bottles sprayed silver as a jet-pack to go along with a space theme book such as There’s No Place Like Space! By Tish Rabe.
Sometimes all you need is some ideas and inspiration, so I’ve put together just that using our Lil’ Creatures kids costumes married up to some well-known and well-loved books – no sewing or crafting required! For the littlies our Onesie sets go up to 24 months size, while for the big kids our new Hat & Clip-on Tail Sets just need to be paired with the right idea to pull it all together.
